The West Asia - North Africa (WANA) Forum is a long-term initiative that brings together decision-makers, civil society actors, religious leaders, researchers, business owners, media representatives and other relevant regional stakeholders.
His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal, with the support of The Nippon Foundation, established the WANA Forum as a platform for promoting dialogue and collective action to address the issues that affect WANA.
The First Annual WANA Forum took place in April 2009, bringing together over 70 individuals from throughout the region to discuss shared challenges and concerns. It formed the first of three stages of the WANA Forum process, which aims to identify and prioritise key issues, to develop policy recommendations and to disseminate and advocate these policy proposals to decision-makers across WANA.
The outcome of the first meeting highlighted a number of cross-cutting areas for action:
- The promotion of environmental education for sustainable development and the development of 'green' industries and infrastructure.
- The reconstruction and recovery of war-torn or conflict-affected parts of the region.
- The enhancement of social cohesion between the region's diverse peoples.
The Second Annual WANA Forum will take place from the 16th until the 18th of May 2010 in Amman, Jordan. Regional experts and international partners will meet to further develop these initiatives into policy proposals.
